Portslade
Under the current system children from Portslade BN41 1 and 2 can send their children to a number of different schools: Portslade Community College, Hove Park or Blatchington Mill. This won't happen if the new proposals of the Secondary Admissions Review go through.
From 2008 if you live in BN41 2 you will only be able to send your child to Portslade Community College unless there is a sibling at another school. After 2013 the sibling link will no longer apply if you live outside the catchment area for that school. If you live in BN41 1 you will be in the catchment area for Hove Park and Blatchington Mill. If your school of choice is oversubscribed (as most schools in dual catchments will be under an equal preference system) then your child will go into a lottery to decide which school they get a place at. If both the schools in your catchment area are oversubscribed and there are not enough places within schools in your catchment area then there will be a lottery to decide which children will be directed to any schools in Brighton and Hove that have places remaining. The council is proposing to negotiate with schools to offer 15 additional places each year to prevent this from happening. However numbers are very tight.
The number of available school places in Blatchington Mill and Hove Park is 600. The number of Y5 children in the Hove Park catchment area (less the average that go to Cardinal Newman each year) is 601. The number of Y4 children (less the average that go to Cardinal Newman each year) is 609. This means it would not take very many children to move into the catchment area before both schools were oversubscribed and children were directed to whichever schools in Brighton and Hove had places left.
