Impact by area:
Preston Park
Some of Preston Park ward is to be included in the Dorothy Stringer/Varndean catchment which is vastly oversubscribed. The Not only did the Council 'lose' 66 children who were not included in a catchment already full to bursting, but out of catchment siblings figures will ensure that an area that has two local schools within easy walking distance will end up directing some of its children to under subscribed schools much further away.
Even those children who do not get sent out of their area are penalised as they will have no choice about which of the two schools, Stringer or Varndean they are allotted as the ballot determines this for them. Friends will not know which school they will attend or whether they will stay together.
Families live in Preston Park partly because of the choice of local schools. This choice is to be stripped away from them.
The Prestonville part of the ward is not included in the Stringer/Varndean catchment (see separate Prestonville area)
